Peter has extensive experience advising clients across the full lifecycle of intellectual property protection, with a particular focus on patent prosecution and portfolio development. He counsels clients on IP strategy, prior art and validity questions, and the procurement and management of patent portfolios, and he has handled nearly every aspect of IP protection, including due diligence, Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) proceedings, patent litigation, and appellate work.
Peter's technical background spans the chemical, life sciences, and engineering fields. He has prosecuted and litigated patents in technology areas including medical devices—such as orthopedic implants (bone screws, bone mesh, and spinal implants) and cardiac rhythm management devices—as well as wireless communications, LEDs and lighting, digital cameras, automotive components, and chemical compounds.
Peter has also represented numerous clients in Inter Partes Reviews before the PTAB and has handled several appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Peter received a Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry from the University of Utah and a Juris Doctor from the University of Minnesota Law School. He is admitted to practice before the state and federal courts of North Carolina and Ohio and before the Federal Circuit, and he is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association and the American Intellectual Property Law Association. Prior to becoming an attorney, Peter worked as an analytical chemist for Battelle Memorial Institute, supporting projects for the U.S. Army.
